Certificate Programs
The Orthotic and Prosthetic Educational and Development Fund offers the Chester Haddan Scholarship Program to provide grants to individuals who are pursuing an education in orthotics and prosthetics. Each year the program awards $1000 to a deserving O&P certificate program student.
Qualifications
- Student must be a full-time student in an accredited O&P certificate program;
- demonstrate financial need;
- display leadership qualities;
- contribute to their own education financially; and
- provide a recommendation from someone currently working within the orthotic and/or prosthetic profession.
Applications
Students may apply directly for the scholarship, or a professor may nominate them. To be considered for the award, students must submit a completed application (PDF), a letter of recommendation, a transcript, and a 200-word essay on why they want to work in O&P.
The award will be announced during the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (recipient need not be present).

Scholarships for Residents of IL, WI, OR IN
The Academy’s Midwest Chapter offers the Gunter Gehl Scholarship in the amount of $1000 for O&P students that have completed a certificate program in orthotics or prosthetics and are a full-time resident of IL, WI, IN. Students must submit an application, research article and a curriculum vitae to the Midwest Chapter by April 1. The Midwest Chapter Board will select the four best research papers. The chosen four will then make a 15-minute presentation of their paper at the Midwest Chapter meeting. Details are available from the Midwest Chapter.
Dale Yasukawa Scholarship Program
The Orthotic and Prosthetic Assistance Fund's Dale Yasukawa Scholarship Program is open to all full-time certificate candidates enrolled in Northwestern University's Prosthetic Orthotic Center (NUPOC). Its chief purpose is to encourage student participation in their local Chapter of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists. OPAF expects that the $500 award will be used specifically to defray local chapter meeting registration fees and assist in the purchasing of books, supplies, and equipment needed for ongoing studies at NUPOC.
Qualifications
Candidates must be full-time degree candidates enrolled in Northwestern University's Prosthetic Orthotic Center (NUPOC).
Applications
To be considered for the award, students must submit the following:
- A package of information that includes a current curriculum vitae (indicating current grade point average and class rank or percentile ranking); and
- A short narrative (no more than two double-spaced pages in length) that describes why she/he is a good candidate for the award. The application narrative should address:
- Financial need;
- School/community/volunteer activities;
- Noteworthy personal and academic achievements and awards and recognitions; and
- Work/internship history
Applications under the current cycle are due no later than May 1.

Note: Please do not send via regular mail any applications, binders, folders, or any permanently bound material. Such material will not be considered and any material received through this avenue cannot be returned.
All applications will be reviewed by a sub-committee of the Board of Directors of the Fund.
The successful applicant in the current funding cycle will be expected to offer OPAF a short narrative (at least two double-spaced pages in length) about their experiences at their local Chapter AAOP meeting. This essay will appear on a special page set aside on the OPAF web site to recognize the student's professional accomplishments and experiences in O&P.
All successful applicants will also be responsible for keeping their own receipts and financial records for any reporting required in compliance with Internal Revenue Service guidelines as stated in IRS Publication 520 "Scholarships and Fellowships." Century College
Century College has a scholarship named for Ken Chagnon, to pay tribute to this O&P educational pioneer, by supporting educational goals of highly motivated students who are dedicated to helping the physically challenged though a career in O&P.
Amount
$1500 prorated between the fall and spring semesters.
Criteria
- Applicant is currently registered at Century College and has a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher;
- Applicant is a graduate of at least one orthotic/prosthetic program at Century College;
- Applicant is enrolled (or will be enrolled) in O&P with a minimum of 12 credits per semester leading to an A.A.S. degree or certificate in O&P during each semester the award is received;
- Applicant’s personal letter demonstrates financial need;
- Applicant submits a written recommendation from an orthotic/prosthetic instructor.
